This Little Light of Mine...

I am guest posting on Who Says 8 is Enough today. My new blog buddy, Debi, is an amazing woman of God with a true heart for children and Life! She hosts Baby Picture Sundays and is taking a couple weeks off for packing and moving...ugh. That gives me unsavory flashbacks. Good Luck Debi! My prayers are with you!

"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22,23

We were praying this scripture over families during an intercession set at the Orlando House of Prayer - claiming purity and setting our hearts upon the Lord. And I was struggling with this question: How can we help our children's eyes remain good, bright? While we may try to shield them from the darkness of the world, they still have to live in it. We can try to guard their hearts, limit their exposure to media, keep them close. But, can any of that ensure that they will stay children of light? I repent of the hours I've let slip by while my own have been fed on Spongebob Squarepants and Star Wars. I desire that they would hunger after God the way they crave pepperoni pizza. I cried out, "Lord, how can I feed them LIGHT?" And you know what? He actually answered me.

"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light" Eph. 5:8 and after that, "Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house." Matt. 5:15

Oh! How I love when the Word of God becomes a conversation!

So, by keeping my eye good and being full of God's light, I can give light to my whole family. But, I can't keep it to myself; I have to let it shine and touch their lives intimately. I have to feed them the fruit Holy Spirit has grown in me: goodness, righteousness, and truth. But, it doesn't stop with me! Their light shines for me as well. How often has a black cloud over my head been blown away by the smiles, hugs, and bright eyes they have for me! How often has this happened to you?

I am so blessed and continue to be amazed by GOODNESS. Once again, I return to a simple Sunday School song: "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine! Hide it under a basket? NO! I'm gonna let it shine!"

  4. What a great post Dixie!

So much to pray about as I am that overprotective...keep them in a bubble, shielded from the world for as long as I can- Mommy. Thanks for such a thought provoking post!

    Blessings,
